What is the colon?

The colon or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive track. It is approx 5 to 6 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. It's major functions are to eliminate waste and conserve water. Also, there are bacteria living in the colon which synthesize valuable nutrients such as vitamins "K" and portions of the "B" complex.

What is the purpose of having colon hydrotherapy (colonic)?

Well, waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time (i.e. impacted feces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites, worms etc.) pose several problems. First, this material is quite toxic (poisonous). These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the bloodstream making us feel ill, tired or weak. Second, impacted materials impair the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria produced vitamins. And finally, a build-up of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation and the result of these disorders can lead to colon cancer.

Colon Hydrotherapy is not a medical procedure, nor is it the practice of medicine. It is an "adjunctive to personal hygiene"

What is a healthy, proper functioning bowel?

Provided you have a good diet (lots of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables) you should eliminate within one hour after every meal. So, three meals a day should yield three bowel movements in that day. Elimination should be quick and painless and should feel complete. Stool should be medium to light brown, have very little odor and should break up in water.

What makes a colonic so important?

While the lungs, skin, kidneys and liver also serve to eliminate toxins, people throughout history have experienced that when the colon is cleansed and healed, the well-being of the whole body is greatly enhanced. Colonics can deliver water safely and comfortably to the client via the colon. Water is the single most important solution- it acts as a medium to hydrate the client.

Hydration improves peristalsis of the colon. The wavelike hydraulic action of water re-nourishes the impacted, de-hydrated or static bowel and empowers the tissues to get moving again.

Water is the single most important element to hygiene. By improving hydration and peristalsis of the bowel, we can create a more hygienic terrain for the body's innate intelligence to express itself.

Colon cancer, often called colorectal cancer, develops in the large intestines. If detected early, 90% of colorectal cancer can be easily treated and cured. Colon hydrotherapy is an excellent proactive measure when added to your lifestyle to prevent this disease.

How serious is colon cancer?

Death begins within the colon.

It's the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Ontario.

7,800 Ontarians will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year.

3,250 people will die from it. That's how serious it is!

Visit from the Ontario Government.

Does a colonic hurt?

No. The "one-use only" rectal nozzle is the same diameter as a pencil and is lubricated at the tip for you alone to privately and easily insert. About an inch is inserted into your anus and cannot go any further because of the design function of the device. The purified water gently flows up the rectum and into your colon. The water loosens the fecal matter and as you begin to feel full, the colon's peristaltic muscular action causes you to naturally push and opens up the anal sphincter muscle for release. The fecal matter, mucous, parasites, gas, yeast..etc..flows out painlessly like a diarrhea, down the rectum. Whether the matter is watery or solid, it passes through the enlarged sphincter (anus), around the nozzle and down into the concealed drain below the client. Just like it does when you sit on a toilet at home. Except, there is no odor or mess because the matter is immediately flushed through our vented system. Most clients report their colon hydrotherapy session as being both refreshing and relieving.

Is a colonic safe?

Yes. A "colonic" is much safer and easier than the common enema.

How does a colonic differ from an enema?

An enema only reaches the rectum (eight inches to twelve inches long) whereas with a colonic the entire length of the colon (five to six feet long) is reached and it is 30 times more effective. It is said that your colon is as long as you are tall.

How much of the intestines are actually cleansed during a treatment?

It is possible to cleanse the entire length of the large intestine (also called the colon) during the colonic session.

If colonics are so good, why haven't I heard of them before?

In a way, the answer to that is a commentary on our present day lifestyle. Historically, artifacts and records show that people have regularly purified their bodies, including cleansing the colon. Around the turn of the 20th century, the colonic machine was developed to provide a significantly improved method of accomplishing colon cleansing. Up to the late 1920's, many medical doctors had colonic machines in their offices, and machines were found in hospitals as well. Articles dealing with colon health frequently appeared in prestigious medical and scientific journals until the early 1930's. At that time, modern man began a 70 year love affair with drugs and surgery. Resulting in purification and prevention techniques becoming less attractive. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in using natural approaches for healing the body, and colonics have been regaining the respectability they have already earned.

What effect does a colonic have on our immune system?

The removal of stagnant waste material and hardened, impacted toxic residue could rejuvenate the immune tissue that resides in the intestines. Recent European studies speculate that 80% of immune tissue resides in the intestines. This is much higher than previously thought and makes it logical to believe that this type of therapy could influence such immune deficiency diseases. Colon hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but an important adjunctive therapy in your overall health care.

Who can have a colonic?

Anyone who meets and exceeds the guidelines after filling out the History Intake Form found on the Procedure page. Our oldest client is 77 years young and our youngest is 11 years old. Children are often constipated and our services provides a safe and private environment for anyone to release in comfort. For many, "That last ten to twenty pounds could be hiding in that little pot-belly that has been impossible to rid-off through endless diet and exercise routines."

Who cannot have a colonic?

Anyone who does not pass the contraindications (requirements).

If you had the following conditions within the last 6 months; congestive heart failure, intestinal perforation, carcinoma of the rectum, fissures or fistula, severe hemorrhoids, renal insufficiency, colon or rectal surgery, abdominal hernia, first & last trimester of pregnancy, cirrhosis. For a detailed description of the above mentioned conditions scroll down to the end of this page.

Is there any possibility of bacterial or viral contamination from prior use of the equipment?

No, The use of sterile disposables and sealed one use only nozzles, coupled with the implementation of the multi-stage sanitation protocol leaves no danger of contamination. Also, the system has a smooth non-porous fiberglass surface where bacteria cannot penetrate and harbor.

What is the difference between your colon irrigation equipment and others?

Our system known as the open system allows you the ability to evacuate 4 to 5 times more fecal matter in a single session than the other systems known as closed systems. With the open system, the anal sphincter muscle can open much, much, wider and release larger fecal matter around the pencil sized nozzle. With the closed system, fecal matter larger than one inch in diameter cannot go through the one inch diameter proctoscope to escape. During a colonic session with our open system, you will experience approximately 40 to 50 releases that you control during the session, with out need of massaging to loosen and break up fecal matter. With the closed system you would only experience between 10 to 15 releases or tie-offs that the therapist controls, during the same time period. Massage of the abdomen area is often needed to help break up and dislodge matter with closed systems. Our system allows you greater voluntary control over exercising the colon muscle as opposed to involuntary control with the closed. Both open and closed systems work well but one works more efficiently and is more private.

Does having a menstrual period at the time of a colonic session have any effect on the experience?

No. Some consider it a good time to have a colonic session since your body is already cleansing. Your flow will not interfere with the success of the session.

Can I work directly after having a colonic session?

Yes. You can go back to work just as you would after a regular bowel movement. You would actually feel like a load has been lifted from you. And it literally has!!

Are the therapist qualified to perform colonics?

Yes. Our staff have been certified to perform colon hydrotherapy from "The C.N.H.H.C." A Canadian-based clinical and educational resource institute specializing in the study and practice of colon therapy and North America's Leading Colon Therapy Institute. Certificates and qualifications of our therapist are displayed at the clinic.

Is a colonic embarrassing?

Other colon hydrotherapy equipment (closed systems) require a therapist to insert a (1-inch diameter x 4-inch long) proctoscope into your bottom and hold it there during the entire process. If this is a new experience, it can be embarrassing for some people. However, because of the design function of our device, this potential for embarrassment is eliminated. Our colonic process is called an open system. Although your lower garments are entirely removed, you are discretely covered during the entire procedure and our procedure does not require a therapist to insert the nozzle into your bottom. Your private area remains private to you alone. No mess, no fuss, no odor, in fact a very relaxing and dignified experience. You insert the one time use rectal nozzle (pencil size) one inch into your bottom. The nozzle is lubricated so there is no pain and because of our systems' design, the nozzle cannot go any further into the rectum than is required.

A colonic is excellent for cleaning out the colon prior to a colonoscopy. Colon cancer is the second leading form of cancer in North America.

The list of disorders that can be affected by colonics includes: acne, psoriasis, eczema, arthritis, pre-menstrual syndrome, painful menstruation, fertility problems, depression, back pain, bad breath, colds/flu, fatigue, headaches, allergies, hay fever, asthma, sinus problems, intestinal parasites, worms and poor blood circulation.

Does colon hydrotherapy wash away all the bacteria, even the good?

If your bowel is toxic you have little or no good intestinal flora to begin with. As in gardening, if you do not prepare the soil and fertilize the ground, plants will not live. The helpful bacteria can only live in an acidic environment, whereas the harmful ones thrive in an alkaline environment. Most people, due to years of improper eating, lack of exercise and poor elimination, have an alkaline colon. The great benefit of a cleansing program is to change the environment from alkaline to acid. If we make conditions favorable in the colon for bifodophilus and acidophilus- the good bacteria- they will populate. After your colonic session, we offer a free probiotic capsule (acidophilus and bifodophilus) to help in the production of B vitamins and to produce acetic and lactic acids to lower the ph of the intestines, thus inhibiting undesirable yeast, bacteria and viruses.

Why is a colonic better than taking laxatives?

First of all, laxatives are irritants to the body. The body identifies it and quickly tries to evacuate it out of the body producing a thin watery stool and leaves behind impacted feces and waste on the walls of the colon. Sounds stressful doesn't it! Well it is and the body tells you this with effects like cramping and diarrhea. This method is often prescribed for patients prior to having a colonoscopy. There is a better way and until now, our state of the art system was not available. A colonic is a gentle way to evacuate the old putrefied debris, gas and mucous. By using body temperature, purified water to flush the colon clean, you will provide hydration unlike with laxatives that can dehydrate and weaken the patient.

What happens during a colonic session?

A colonic consists of infusing ultra-violet filtered, (98F - 103F) 34 to 39 C temperature water via the rectum. Our open colonic system uses a very small disposable rectal nozzle. Our equipment has a multi-stage water purification system and a lighted viewing tube that allows you to see the evacuated matter leaving your colon. This open system is designed so debris is transported into the drain without offensive odor and without compromising the dignity of the individual. The unit is thoroughly cleansed and disinfected after each session with approved environment-friendly cleaning agents.

During a treatment, you will experience several fills and releases of water. Like the tide of the ocean, ebbs and flows, the water gently removes fecal debris, gas and mucous. You are shown how you can apply a light massage to your tummy to help dislodge toxic waste material adhering to the walls of the colon. The debris is gently washed away through the system's waste disposal drain line. Each treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes and you should allow at least one hour per visit.

During a typical colonic, between 8 to 16 gallons of water will be transported into and out of the colon. A good colonic can yield about 40 to 50 regular bowel movements worth of material. Initially, further treatments will produce even more substantial release of old, hardened and impacted feces that becomes dislodged from the colon wall. These pieces can live inside your colon for years, even decades. A client passed a coin she had ingested when she was a teenager approximately 20 years earlier. You never know what treasures you will uncover during a colonic. After a couple sessions, you will actually see your progress as less and less discharged waste passes through the viewing tube.

Frequency of sessions?

The number of sessions varies from person to person depending on your goals, medical and intestinal background, diet and lifestyle. We review your History Intake Forms with you and answer your questions. You choose your course of sessions. For instance, let's say you saw allot of fecal matter leaving your colon (through the viewing tube) all the way up to the end of your first colonic session. It would make sense to book another colonic session asap to continue the clean-out of your internal plumbing. After all, you are looking directly at accumulated toxic fecal matter and or parasitic infestation that is sucking your energy and weakening your immune system. Because you "actually see matter leaving your colon" you can choose further colonic sessions at your discretion. A good start to a health program may be from 3 to 6 colonics quite close together, within a 2 to 4 week period. With our procedure, you can perform a series of colonics everyday until the colon is clear. This can then be maintained at monthly intervals to be proactive and preventative for a long vital healthy life. Just imagine if you only brushed or flossed your teeth once a month what the plaque build up would look like. In the same way as you are required to perform routine maintenance on your vehicle like a "lube & oil change" for greater fuel efficiency and longer life of your engine. Most clients return on a routine basis or when they have splurged excessively after a Mexican holiday binge-fet! Nothing beats a colonic to flush the pipes after a week of an all inclusive "see-food" fiesta.

What if I need to urinate during my colonic?

No problem with our open system. You urinate as you would on a toilet. With our system, the basin drain below your bottom receives urine, feces, mucous ...etc without you having to move. With closed colonic procedures, to urinate requires the therapist to disconnect the proctoscope from your anus to allow you to go sit over a toilet.

After my colonic?

Most people feel a significant change. Many feel an immediate relief and experience a feeling of alertness, a feeling of being lighter, increased senses (sight, taste, smell and feeling), better mobility, relief of emotional dysfunction, regular bowel movements and improvement of the digestive system.

What do I eat before and after a cleanse?

Refrain from eating 2 hours before your colonic. After your colonic, we provide you with a complimentary probiotic drink which helps to replenish the good bacteria. We also advise you to refrain from consuming alcohol or red meat for 6 hours after your colonic to avoid gas.

Practicing healthier eating habits such as increasing your intake of raw, fresh, whole grains, fruits or vegetables before and after a cleanse helps allot It makes sense to reduce the intake of red meat and dairy and try using fish, tofu or chicken for protein instead. Avoid refined foods and "white" grains as they can slow digestion and form mucous. Try spelt, corn, oats and brown rice. Also learning about food combinations can eliminate gas and bloating tremendously. Don't be overwhelmed by this information, it is only a suggestion. If you just had colonics and didn't change your diet, you would still benefit tremendously.

Can you become dependant on colonics? Could the colon stop functioning on its own?

Colon hydrotherapy retrains the muscle of the bowel to regain strength. The bowel muscle is forced to work against the water, providing resistance much like a weight provides resistance against a muscle in bodybuilding. After the bowel has regained strength, it works better on its own. Colonics are like "colon aerobics." For those who make the time to work-out at the gym and have experienced those benefits similarly add colonics to "get cut" while increasing muscle mass in their body-building routines. In fact, many top level athletes routinely perform colonics to assist in ridding the body of toxins which improves the absorption of nutrients for faster recuperation. This promotes muscle cell growth and quicker regeneration. We do not recommend the use of anabolic steroids, but several bodybuilders use colonics to rid themselves of the toxic build-up in the liver.

Is a colonic covered by OHIP?

Colon Hydrotherapy is not covered under OHIP. Colonics when prescribed by a Physician or a Naturopathic doctor is covered under most Employee Extended Health Care Plans. In both instances, you are required to pay for the colonic treatment up front and submit the receipt to the appropriate channels for reimbursement of fees.

At our clinic, a Naturopathic doctor provides this service. To start using your benefits for your hydrotherapy sessions, a short appointment is required with our Naturopathic doctor. Simply call our office to book a 15 minute appointment to get started.

Is a colonic session expensive?

Typically, you can spend between $85 to $100/hr per session using a closed colonic system. Most closed systems require a therapist to insert a one inch dia proctoscope into the clients' anus and hold on to it during the entire session so the proctoscope does not fall out and spill fecal matter. Does the job! But, so does our open system (using a smaller pencil-sized disposable nozzle that you insert) which provides you with greater privacy, dignity and comfort. Our price is comparable at $100/hr per session and we offer discount package options to meet every budget.

Detailed explanation of the colonic contraindications.

Renal Insufficiency
The defective function of the kidneys with accumulation of waste products (particularly nitrogenous) in the blood. The insufficient secretion of wastes by the kidneys.
Intestinal Perforation
A hole that passes through the entire wall of the stomach, small intestine or large bowel. The condition is a medical emergency.
Congestive Heart Failure
A condition in which the heart's function as a pump to deliver oxygen rich blood is inadequate to meet the body's needs.
Rectal Carcinoma
Almost all rectal cancers are primary adenocarcinomas. It is the major cause of mortality and morbidity in North America. Rectal cancers are, after colon cancers, the second most common gastrointestinal carcinoma, and have the best prognosis. The 5-year survival rate is approximately 50%. Screaming for and removing adenomatous polyps may improve survival rates. Adenocarcinomas of the rectum arises as a intramucosal epithelial lesion, usually in the adenomatous polyp or gland. As cancers grow, they invade the muscularis mucosa, lymphatic structures, and vascular structures and involve regional lymph nodes, adjacent structures, and distant sites, especially the liver.
Fissures
An anal fissure is a tear in the skin around the opening of the anus. It can cause sharp pain, especially when opening the bowels. Anal fissure is thought to be a common disorder for which many people do not seek medical advice. It can easily be confused with hemorrhoids (piles).
Fistulas
An abnormal connection between an organ, vessel, or intestine and another structure. Fistulas are usually the result of injury or surgery. It can also result from infection or inflammation. Inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, is an example of a disease that leads to fistulas between one loop of intestine and another. Injury can lead to fistulas between arteries and veins.
Hemorrhoids
Or piles are swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus. The anatomical term "hemorrhoids" technically refers to cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the junction of the rectum and the anus. The term hemorrhoids refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. They may result from the straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and anal intercourse. They are either inside the anus-internal-or under the skin around the anus-external.
Abdominal Hernia
In general, a hernia refers to the protrusion of an organ through a weak area in the muscles or tissue that surround and contain it. Most commonly, the word hernia is used to refer to an abdominal hernia. This type of hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue pushes the inner lining of the abdominal wall (the outer layer of muscle, fat and tissue that extends from the bottom of the ribs to the top of the thighs) through the weak area in the abdominal muscles, causing the out pouching of the abdominal wall. This area may have been weak at birth, or it may have been weakened by age, injury or a previous surgical incision. The out pouching, which turns into a noticeable bulge, can contain fat, intestine or other tissue. The bulge can be either reducible, meaning that the fat or tissue can be pushed back into the abdominal cavity and the hernia will flatten and disappear, or non reducible, which means the fat or tissue cannot be pushed back into the abdomen and the hernia will not flatten. If the hernia is non reducible, it must be repaired surgically, because the out pouching can contain intestine which can lose it's blood supply and die if it becomes tightly trapped (called strangulation). Strangulation of an intestine causes extreme pain, can block digestion and may even cause gangrene in the area of intestine. In this case, emergency surgical repair is required.
